Inspired by Donald Judd's philosophy of integrating art with landscape, the artist retreat is physically submerged into the earth and creates a direct relationship between the architecture and its environment. In addition to carving through the land, the structure uses its materiality and direct circulation path to complement the city of Marfa and become an "artificial desert."
