The guardrail for West Residence began with a custom milled baluster “knuckle” that would allow for no visible welds or hardware. All connections and attachment methods are contained within each knuckle and mounted to the stair by a hidden steel plate behind the wood wall panels. The robust hidden connections prevent deflection along the stair while maintaining a minimal profile. The blackened steel rod balusters are finished with a brass sleeve and capped with cold-rolled steel flat bar.
